Joyeful One of a Kind, Buy Handmade
It is all over the internet, buy handmade!! I have always loved handmade items. Growing up, my mother and sister were seemingly forever making “stuff”. From drapes to jams to paper mache globes to sweaters. Needed something, make it! I know some of that mentality came from my mom growing up in the Depression. Make do and fend for yourself, and do it yourself. Some of her contemporaries, when the economy improved, wanted store bought, that was the cool thing then. A sign of affluence, buy it in the store ready made. But that feeling never came over in my family. I had a treasure trove of quilts from grandmothers on both sides, as well as crocheted tablecloths, doilies, and old family recipes. Those were always the most special, made with love we would say. Now we live in a technological world, fast and no time to create. But wait, there are so many artists out there(including me!) who value the handmade and keep up their craft. It is difficult for us to make as much income as the big stores who are buying things produced by cheap labor(which is another whole topic).
For those who haven’t discovered this awesome site, you got to check out Etsy.com. I know, I know, most of you know about this already, but for those who don’t cruise the internet looking for cool handmade items, this is the place to look. Think of a mega mall of all artists from all over the world at affordable prices.
Every Friday I have been featuring a find on the internet, music, poetry, art and so on and many times I will feature someone on Etsy.
This week I would like to show you BarefootWeaver. Cait Throop runs this amazing little internet boutique full of hand woven colorful pieces. I am partial to fiber, and she is highly skilled. I bought one of her woven cuffs and it is a delightful piece full of blues (like those blues!) peeking at me through-out the day.
Buy hand made, it is still made with care and love!
