Walking About

It was a day of walking about, swimming, shopping, and basically soaking in the florals and the Hawaiian sun!

I found the coolest earrings in my shopping adventure today. When traveling, I always try and find the local artist guild to locate the best local artists. In Paia, I found a small guild with some especially unique jewelry made from flowers, yes made from flowers, not a sketch painting, likeness, made from the actual flower petals.

These little gem earrings are made by Joan Mercer, “Floral Artist” from Kahului, Hawaii. She has a magnificent garden and takes the petals from her flowers and makes jewelry and wind chimes from them. How cool!

Hawaiian Week: Part 2

Going to Yoga

Got up this morning to a bright blue sky, fresh wind, birds chirping and ready for yoga! Great way to start the day, especially outdoors with the Pacific Ocean in the distance!

What a sky!! We decided to explore the famous Maui Up Country and drove to a Lavender Farm. Unbelievable view, awesome flowers(discovered that I have lavender growing in my Margate NJ yard, who would have known??), and leisurely but gorgeous trails.

Then off to the Botanical Gardens down the road for another set of leisurely, but gorgeous trails.

Hawaii is known for its’ flowers. Everywhere you walk, drive, or bike there are more flowers. The trees, the bushes, even weeds have beautiful flowers peeking through!! Truly inspiring.

Hawaiian Week: Part 1

Clouds

I really saw clouds from both sides yesterday. I haven’t posted for several days since I was so busy preparing for our Hawaiian trip! Yesterday was a marathon day of flying. Traveling from Philadelphia to Maui is not short of a miracle. So many miles, so many clouds, so much sitting, but well worth it!
Today was our first full day of this paradise island. First breakfast in an open air relaxed dining area with a breath taking view.

Waking

Then a short walk and yoga.

Beach and meandering around the island.

Dinner at a cool veg restaurant, then driving home in an amazing sunset admiring the clouds!

Wednesday’s Creative Tip: Bring Along a Creative Activity

As I mentioned yesterday, I am going out of town next week,…. to Hawaii! I will posting as often as I can from this paradise and will be showing you their unbelievable florals through photos. To get ready for this trip, and really any one I take, I plan at least a week ahead of time what creative activities I want to bring to stimulate me. This is an excellent idea for anyone who is interested in pursuing a creative lifestyle. Traveling brings so many new visuals, tastes, music, fashion, colors, you name it, it is different from where you live.
My plan is to bring books, one is:

Book to pack

David Mitchell is such a vibrant and unique author. I can’t wait to hunker down with this book! I read Cloud Atlas and loved it!
I also am going to bring a knitting project for the plane. I have to remember to pack my small scissors, or they will be confiscated by security!
Also, my trusty camera and video camera, which both happen to be in my iPhone!
Small sketch book and pencils to have a sketch journal.
Idea journal for random creative ideas that may pop in my head while absorbing the immense Hawaiian beauty!

A Day in the Life: Knitting

It is still the lazy days of summer around here. I am getting ready to go away next week and frantically trying to prepare, so it is actually not so lazy for me. Workshops and shows have been taking a lot of my energy, so I have not spent much time in the studio the last week. I have, however, been finishing up a sweater vest that I designed.

I often make a sketch first of a garment I am going to construct. My ideas come from catalogues, magazines, TV, and just plain observing people. I have noticed that ruffles seem to be very big for fall, and I love ruffles!! This vest is knit with a Noro cotton yarn in greens and aquas. It has a double crocheting crew neck with a ruffle up the front.

Food is Good: Vegetarian Lasagna

Who doesn’t like lasagna? This is another extremely yummy vegetarian comfort food, hmmm, mmmm!!
Here is my son JJ’s amazing recipe for
Vegetarian Lasagna:

-BLANCH ONE BOX OF LASAGNA IN SALT WATER FOR 5 MINUTES
-HEAT SAUTE PAN WITH OLIVE OIL
-SAUTE DICED ONIONS UNTIL BEGIN TO SWEAT
-SAUTE DICED CARROTS, PABLNO PEPPER, RED BELL PEPPER, 3 GARLIC CLOVES AND GREEN ONIONS
-ADD ONE LARGE BAG OF SPINACH
-MIX ONE JAR OF MARINARA
-ADD PINCH OF SALT, PEPPER AND CUMIN

-IN LARGE 9’14 BAKING PAN LAY DOWN LAYER OF NOODLES
-LAYER SAUTE MIX
-COVER WITH MOZZARELLA, MUNSTER, AND PARMESAN
-REPEAT PROCESS
-POUR 1/4 OF A CUP OF MILK OVER ENTIRE LASAGNA FOR EXTRA MOISTURE
-BAKE IN OVEN *350 FOR 45MINS

Musings on Creativity: Dancing Will Set You Free

Isabel Allende is a mesmerizing author. I have been reading her newest novel this weekend, “Island beneath the Sea”. Ms. Allende is a riveting story teller with an historical fiction bent. One thing that has struck me about this novel is her vivid humane description of slavery in the late 1700′s, early 1800′s in Haiti and New Orleans. This book is interesting, and definitely worth the read.
Keeping with my interest in leading a creative life, a quote that has impressed me from the main character, Tete, goes like this: ‘Before I knew how to walk, and when I could just balance myself on two legs he invited me to lose myself in the music, the way you do in a dream. “Dance, dance, Zarid, the slave who dances is free…while he is dancing, ” he told me. I have always danced’.
Dance, paint, sew, compose, it will set you free!

Arts in the Park

Ok, I am going to brag a bit. I started a local arts festival in my town 15 years ago and it is going strong! I live in a small community outside Philly. 15 years ago, I had the idea of initiating an arts festival highlighting local artists and in turn raising money for the park it was located in. It was a resounding success and has gone on to be a highlight of our community’s calendar. What I am most proud of is how this fair has united our community. Religious, ethnic, young, and old come out for it. We mingle, talk, and have a general good time.
This is from their fall newsletter about the event: ‘Planning for the first AIP, held in May, began only in March. The late Marjorie Bayersdorfer, an advocate for restoring native vegetation to the park, approached a friend and local artist, Joye Schwartz, about holding an event in the nascent park. Joye suggested having a professional art exhibit on the grounds of the park, and organized the arts part of the festival. She notes that her artist friends agreed to exhibit there as a favor to her—a far cry from today, when artists pay to enter a jur- ied contest for a limited number of exhibit booths (about 50). In addition to the art show that first year, there were also a clown, enough food to keep attendees and volunteers fed (ice cream, pizza and lemonade), a plant sale, and that quintessential feature of fundraisers, a bake sale.’
