Inspiration Thursday, Cezanne

Cezanne still life

You would be hard pressed to find a modern day painter who does not feel he has been influenced in some way by the great Paul Cezanne. Cezanne has been called the father of modern art. He changed the way we think of the painting process. Why? He flattened the picture plane, making the artist look at perspective in a totally new light. Rules were in place about traditional painting when he painted involving perspective views in a landscape or still life. He played with the normal take, and subtly changed the perspective he painted. For example, look at the vase above and see how it is leaning ever so slightly, that wouldn’t really be, the vase would fall over. Many of his still life paintings are like that.

He also manipulated the landscape. He painted mountains and outdoor scenes in a unique way through unusual color and brushwork.
Cezanne’s work has made me more aware of the colors I use, and what feelings real or unreal that I want to convey through my artwork.
