Inspiration Thursday: Oil Paints
Ohhhh, painting is so much fun!! I am very fortunate that I can work at what I love, painting. What do I love about it?? I love the colors, the creativity involved, and I like the process of painting itself. If you find something that inspires you, and you work creatively with it, it can only turn into a love affair.
I started painting in watercolors over 23 years ago, which is somewhat unusual. It is often the other way around, oils first, then try watercolors. Watercolor is a difficult medium, one in which you need to learn to control the paint or you will be a very disappointed artist. When I was exclusively painting in watercolor, I was often painting with my friend Rose Naftulin . I ended up posing for her for a large painting she wanted to exhibit in an upcoming gallery show. She painted mainly in oils. I watched her paint while posing and the process seemed so intriguing. “Rose, do you prefer painting oils over watercolors?” I asked her. She then proceeded to expound on how different the two different mediums were, but both were exhilarating to work with. “You should try oils, Joye, they are like painting with butter!”, Rose said. And I did, and Rose is right!! Oils are so smooth and creamy, like playing with paint.
I have recently started an oil painting of a boat scene. Half the fun of beginning this painting was setting up my palette and mixing the paint, so dreamy and creamy!!
It makes applying the paint an experience. Slather, slather, lots of color, and oh yeah make the painting look good
I am in the middle of this painting, but here is the progress so far, the red is the underpainting.
Stay tuned, the finished painting will be up soon!
