Wednesday’s Creative Tip: The Odd Guy is In

When designing for a still life painting, or simply setting up a vignette in your home or apartment, keep in mind the odd number strategy. An odd number of items always look more pleasing to the eye than an even number. It is an intuitive feel when looking at a scene that odd is better than even. Take a look:

2 cups of Tea

Looking at the 2 cups makes you feel like it is ordinary, who cares about 2 cups of tea. When adding a 3rd cup, the set up becomes interesting to our eye.

3 Cups of Tea

Oh yes, 3 cups of tea, isn’t that charming? Primordially, the odd number set up is satisfying and more exciting to look at. Not sure if this has been true since the beginning of time, but if you look at very old paintings, the odd number concept is often used.
Try it in your design strategies, whatever you are planning, you will find that it will help in making the set up more pleasing to look at!
