Week Word: Fugacious

I am the host for this week’s word and it is FUGACIOUS, meaning Lasting but a short time, fleeting. Please take a look at other bloggers who also have submitted a creative take on this word: John, Katy,June and Mary.
If you start to think about how many things in our short life are fleeting, lasting only a short time, it seems that it could almost be anything. Looking at one’s life in comparison to the vast cosmos of space and time, our life itself is fugacious. But taking a closer more timely look, two things come to mind, flowers(don’t I always think of them?) and children.
Spring flowers especially seem to come and go rather quickly. We spend so much time buying the bulbs, planting them in the fall, and then they pop up sometimes only for days, many times weeks.

spring has finally sprung

Then there is the fleeting aspect of childhood. Appreciate your children or grandchildren every second you are with them, because their childhood is fugacious.

Life can be fugacious, but stop be grateful and slow it down!

A Day in the Life: Sewing is so Nourishing

I love to sew. I taught myself in college when I had virtually no clothes and wanted a fashionable wardrobe. I didn’t realize that it was supposed to be difficult or possibly uncool to sew your own clothes. I found myself a used sewing machine for $25, bought a Vogue pattern, some fabric that I loved and made myself a skirt and top. Wow, that was fun! I discovered that I could pick my own fabric and my own one of a kind wardrobe. Years went by and I tired of it for awhile and returned to knitting, quilting, and always painting.
I now have grandchildren and have discovered such an awesome nourishing way to make something for them. I ordered some fabric online that I designed plus I have a stash of fabric. I measured my little girls, and designed them some sweet skirts!

The girls had so much fun picking out fabric and then wearing the skirt! Such a nourishing artistic act to do for someone I cherish.
Quality time at its’ best!

Inspiration Thursday: Children

It is true, I write about my family a lot and how they mean so much to me. I have just spent almost 2 weeks with my children and grandchildren, on and off with everyone, and I must say, little children are so inspiring!

Hot Chocolate Fun

As adults, we have a tendency to spend lots of time fretting and worrying about responsibilities, work, social stuff, and on and on. But little children have a special way of seizing the moment. They really enjoy the moment. Wow, we are having hot chocolate with marshmallows and whipped cream, how fun!!! They have little concept of time and do things according to their needs, I am hungry, so let’s eat, it is sunny outside, let’s play!!

Having a lollipop

Sitting on the sofa with my sister, having a lollipop, now that is fun!!

By the way, the images are not paintings, they are manipulated photos from my new cool apple app, Sketch Mee!

Being comforted, We All Need That

cat

Everyone needs to be comforted at some point in their day. It may be a hug, an encouraging word, a listening ear, a wink, a phone call, a hand made quilt, or, of course, food that warms your insides. It seems that in the light of the tragic events in Tucson, the whole nation is need of some comfort. I, personally, think we need to stop arguing with each other and actually listen and respect each other’s point of view.
My son and I are collaborating on a vegetarian comfort food cookbook. Lately, we have been testing all of our recipes and photographing them. Our recipes are not only comforting in the food sense, but all come from someone in our family. Our grandmothers, fathers, siblings, nephews, cousins, many a family member have a loving recipe included.

These are recipes for food that was made for an afternoon snack after school, a morning treat in the cold winter, a bread served for a shabbat meal, a drink served in the hot summer days when the family was gathered by the ocean, fun food for football watching with the family, or a borsht whipped up when my husband and I were all playing scrabble with his grandmother.

Now, how could any of these recipes possibly not be tasty when they are filled with such memories, love and comfort?
