Motherly Musings
Yesterday was Mother’s Day and I had such a lovely day! The weather was perfect, sunny, in the high 60′s, and flowers were abloom! I worked for a short time in my boutique, then went into my studio and worked on my large new colorful landscape and gabbed with my mom and mother in law on the phone. I then had a scrumptious dinner prepared by my son on our deck. My 3 sons, my husband and I had dinner, which was after a video chat with my daughter and grandchildren. We finished the day watching a Phillies game. They lost, but who cares? I had such a nice day with family and art, what could be better?

Musings
I am back from all the holidays and have been working away in my beautiful new boutique. I have so many awesome, creative pieces in my shop, it is a bit overwhelming! I have a dilemma, though. I have a new business that needs constant attention, but I have so little opportunity for myself to create. I need time to paint and sew! I hope I can work this out, because my creativity ventures are me, my soul.
I spent 1 hour in my painting studio this morning, that’s a start!

A Word: Freedom
Everyone blogging in our small Week Word community is taking a break this week. However, my word of the week is freedom. I will be celebrating Passover with my family this upcoming week and one of the themes of Passover is freedom. The Jews were finally able to leave Egypt and the holiday is a celebration of this freedom given by God.
But what does it mean to be free? Freedom can make it difficult at times to maintain a meaningful life. Why? Because one then is governed by the freedom of choice and there is an abundance of choices to be made, including choosing what makes your life meaningful. As Dostoyevsky pointed out in his The Brothers Karamazov, If there is no God then everything is permitted.
I believe in our democracy, having freedom is essential, in my opinion, to honoring human rights and dignity. But tradition and my religious doctrine is also essential to meaning in my life. Some may think it takes away my freedom, but I feel that choosing to follow tradition and the precepts in my religion, I have been given even greater freedom in my spirituality. It gives my life meaning in so many ways, and to me is what it is all about.
I will not be blogging until later next week. I wish everyone a good holiday no matter what you observe and am looking forward to getting back to writing my thoughts about creativity.

Inspiration Thursday: Flowering Fruit Trees
Mmmm, it is one of those spring days today that you feel like the lights have been turned on. Everything is starting to wake up and come into bloom. Color, pastels, greens, and that smell, so hopeful.
One of my favorite happenings in the Philadelphia spring, is to look at the amazing flowering trees. They are ubiquitous here.
There is an Asian feel to them, almost like walking in a Japanese garden. All the delicate blossoms and pastel pinks give a feel and smell of upcoming color and plants.
Enjoy your day of spring!!

Cool Artist: Jaimee Newman
I had an awesome opening this past week of a young, talented new artist that you should check out, Jaimee Newman.
She constructs collages based on literature, poetry, or just a concept. The above collage is from a Haruki Murakami short story. When I heard that, it sealed the deal, I am a devoted follower. I feel art is connected to words, music, movement, and basically all creative activity.
Words connote images and Jaimee does an excellent job of executing those images through colorful papers.
Jaimee has been doing a new series of large portraits of famous people which I think she should definitely develop. Way cool.
And then there are her dogs…
She captures the soul and essence of the message. Check out her artwork at her site here, and by the way, I created her website. If you are interested in my web design, contact me.

Inspiration Thursday: Seasons
Driving to my shop today in the spring snow, I was thinking how miraculous it is that our planet has the capability to wake up after a long winter and become spring! My son has planted seeds in small pots placed in our large window in anticipation of the spring planting. They are coming to life, waking up for a new season, right on time, how cool is that??
I do love the seasons and, of course, am ready for some new flowers to emerge to paint!
